Gardens of Quebec: the botanical gardens and flower parks to visit this summer

Jardins du Québec : les jardins botaniques et parcs fleuris à visiter cet été

From the great botanical gardens to the village parish gardens, through rose gardens, water gardens, sculpture parks and the historic gardens of the seigneuries: Quebec blooms from late May to the first frost. This guide gathers Quebec’s botanical and horticultural gardens open to the public, with each one’s listing, hours, prices and events.

Our favourites

Jardin botanique, Montreal. A collection of 22,000 species and cultivars, 10 greenhouses, the Tree House and some thirty themed gardens to explore.

La Seigneurie de l’Île d’Orléans, Saint-François-de-l’Île-d’Orléans. Four hectares of lavender and six gardens, including the five senses, Japanese and Zen gardens, facing the St. Lawrence.

Parc Marie-Victorin, Kingsey Falls, Centre-du-Québec. A garden museum with 3D mosaiculture, 60,000 annuals and 1,200 carnivorous plants, and exhibitions on Québec heritage.

Domaine Joly-De Lotbinière, Sainte-Croix, Chaudière-Appalaches. A national historic site where you can picnic under century-old trees, then walk down to the beach on the river.

Reford Gardens, Grand-Métis. A horticultural work of art with some three thousand plant varieties; from late June, the International Garden Festival presents its creations there.

When to go

Lilacs and tulips in late May, peonies and irises in June, roses and perennials in July, dahlias and grasses in September: every garden has its week of glory, often announced on its listing. Weekday mornings offer the light and the calm; several gardens hold illuminated evenings in summer.

Good to know

The big gardens take half a day and walking shoes; bring a hat and water, shade is scarce among the beds. Most have a restaurant or a picnic area, and a greenhouse open year-round for rainy days.
