Ice fishing in Quebec: the winter outing to try this year

A heated hut on a frozen lake, a line in the hole and the silence of winter: ice fishing is a surprisingly easy outing with children. Centres provide everything, hut, drilled holes, gear, often bait, and many require no licence for youngsters. This guide brings together the ice fishing centres in Quebec, open from January to March depending on the ice, each with the venue’s listing, rates and species.

Tips: book your hut ahead on weekends; bring games for the quiet moments; and check the listing to see whether a fishing licence is included or required for adults.

Our favourites

Ice fishing villages in La Baie, Saguenay. Hundreds of huts go up on the frozen fjord every winter: two villages that together form one of the largest ice fishing sites in the world, with turnkey huts for rent.

Petits poissons des chenaux de la rivière Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, Mauricie. From late December, 350 cabins line up on the ice of the world capital of Atlantic tomcod, a tradition kept alive in groups.

Village Nordik du Port de Québec, Québec City. Fish for trout without leaving the city, with expert advice and equipment provided: a good place to give it a try.

Pêche Blanche Gatineau, Gatineau, Outaouais. More than 200 huts make it a true village on the ice, with several sizes for rent, and bait, hole drilling and tip-ups provided on site.

Centre de pêche C.R., Vaudreuil-Dorion. Between Lac Saint-Louis and Lac des Deux Montagnes, at the mouth of the Ottawa River, ice fishing 25 minutes from Montreal.
