Hikes and lookouts in Quebec: the trails that end with a breathtaking view

A trail is often worth what you find at the end: a lookout over the fjord, an observation tower above the canopy, a summit where you count the lakes. This guide brings together the trails and lookouts across Quebec, chosen because their listing promises a viewpoint, from the family stroll to the summit you have to earn, each with access, length, level and any fees.

Tips: lookouts in national and regional parks require a daily access fee; in fall, aim for weekdays or early mornings, since popular trailhead parking lots fill by 10 a.m. on foliage weekends. Check the listing to see whether the trail is open off-season, several lookouts close in winter or become snowshoe trails.

Our favourites

Mount Royal Park, Montreal. A network of trails, stairways and lookouts in the middle of the city, where you can observe plants and birds all the way up to the 30-metre cross.

Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, Québec City. At 83 metres high, 30 more than Niagara Falls, the falls can be admired from the lookouts, the panoramic stairway, the suspension bridge or the cable car.

Treetop Walk Laurentides, Mont-Blanc. A 1,350-metre wooden boardwalk climbs to the treetops and up to a 40-metre panoramic tower, open year-round.

Village historique de Val-Jalbert, Lac-Saint-Jean. Ouiatchouan Falls, higher than Niagara Falls, can be admired from a glassed-in lookout, between a trolley ride and a visit to the period houses.

Sentiers et poste d’observation Grand Héron, Chazel, Abitibi-Témiscamingue. At the top of the hill, a 10-metre tower and a lookout overlook the islands of Lac Macamic, one of which is home to a heronry.
