June 23 and 24 for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, July 1 for Canada Day, then every week of summer somewhere in Quebec: fireworks punctuate the season, from the big international competitions to village fairs on a lakeshore. This guide gathers Quebec’s venues and events that present fireworks, with each one’s listing, dates and times.
Our favourites
L’International des Feux Loto-Québec, La Ronde, Montreal. From July to early August, major fireworks companies compete in 30-minute pyromusical shows, in what is presented as the biggest fireworks competition in the world.
Croisières Navark fireworks cruise, Longueuil. The boat circles the Boucherville Islands before dropping anchor in a front-row spot for the International des Feux, to watch the show from the water.
Grands Feux Loto-Québec, Québec City. A new theme every evening, and around the fireworks a photo booth, activities and shows on two sites.
Les Grands Feux du Casino Lac-Leamy, Gatineau. Every summer, behind the Canadian Museum of History, a festive, immersive event on a unique site.
Finding your spot
Fireworks start at nightfall, around ten in June and earlier in August. Arrive an hour early for the big sites, with a blanket or chairs; high viewpoints or the far side of the water avoid the crowd and the noise. Launch sites are often closed to traffic: plan to walk back or take transit.
Without a car
In the big cities, bridges, wharves and riverside parks offer free views of the major competitions’ fireworks, and the metro or commuter train brings everyone home. Village fairs have the opposite advantage: easy parking, fireworks fifty metres away, and back at the cottage in ten minutes.
