The inescapable nature of destiny inhabits “The Fifth of Tchaikovsky,” at times calm, at times destructive. Conductor Kensho Watanabe, the very first conducting student of Yannick Nézet-Séguin and one of the favorite conductors of the OM, tackles this symphony. The only destiny from which no one can escape is at the heart of the symphonic poem “Isle of the Dead” by Rachmaninoff. Inspired by a painting of the same title, the composer has reproduced its atmosphere in music, depicting death as a landscape. The Bassoon Concerto by Russian-Canadian composer Airat Ichmouratov continues a series of commissions made by the Orchestre Métropolitain showcasing the talent of its principal players.
