Saint-Martin was the first parish created inland in 1774. Strategically situated between Montreal and Saint-Eustache, the parish rapidly became an important economic and commercial hub. Nowadays Old Saint-Martin is part of a unique historical area that is comprised of the Papineau-Cléroux house, the church built in 1868 based on the plans by architect Victor Bourgeau, the neoclassical style presbytery and the Soeurs de Sainte-Croix (Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Cross) old convent.
